Honoring Those Who Served
The Montana Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team is a ceremonial unit comprised of highly trained Soldiers who are committed to providing the most dignified service possible. Our primary mission is to provide Funeral Honors for fallen Soldiers who have served honorably. Providing honors is more than just a job for our Soldiers. It is an honor for them to pay a final tribute to those Soldiers who served.
Federal law provides that “An honor guard detail for the burial of an eligible veteran shall consist of not less than two members of the Armed Forces. One member of the detail shall be a representative of the parent service of the deceased veteran”. The honor guard detail will, at a minimum, perform a ceremony that includes the folding and presenting of the American flag to the next of kin and the playing of taps. When available taps will be played by a bugler, however there are so few buglers available that the military services may choose to provide an electronic recording of taps."
This service is provided to veterans with an Honorable Discharge at no cost to their families or the funeral homes. Families should make requests for honors through the funeral director. The family should provide the funeral director with the following information:
- Name of deceased
- Date of Birth
- Social Security Number
- Form DD 214 (Active Duty Discharge)
- Form NGB 22 ( National Guardsmen Discharge)
- Or any documentation showing honorable discharge
If you wish to coordinate honors on your own, please call the Military Funeral Honors main office at (406) 324-3231.
